National Stroke Association Honors Get Ahead of Stroke Campaign with 2017 RAISE Award

Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery initiative honored as “Most Impactful” for its stroke education and awareness efforts

Fairfax, Va. — Ahead of World Stroke Day, the National Stroke Association’s Raising Awareness in Stroke Excellence (RAISE) Awards honored the Get Ahead of Stroke campaign for its efforts to ensure all stroke patients have access to proper care.

The RAISE Awards annually honor individuals and groups across the country that have significant impact on stroke awareness.

“This award inspires us to continue working to improve stroke systems of care,” said Dr. Blaise Baxter, a neurointerventional radiologist and the president of the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery. “Just like with trauma, stroke patients deserve the best treatment available, and we are committed to changing outdated policies so more patients can survive stroke,” Baxter added.

The “Most Impactful” award comes after a busy year for the campaign. Get Ahead of Stroke has worked to change stroke protocols in states across the country, met with dozens of policymakers on Capitol Hill, and reached thousands of people on social media with its rallying hashtag, #SurviveStroke.

Earlier this month, it launched a mobile app to help first responders assess stroke severity in emergency situations and, in cases of severe stroke, transport patients to neuroendovascular-ready facilities. The app, Stroke Scales for EMS, is available for download on the iOS App Store and Google Play.
